What Is Your Microbiome?

A universe of living organisms in your digestive tract. There are up to 100 trillion cells living in your gut microbiome which consist of a variety of bacteria, viruses, micro organisms, and a wide array of fungi. The cells in your gut biome can do everything from making you happier, to clearing up acne, to fixing autoimmune issues. When your microbiome is out of balance, it makes you weak, tired, and inflamed – and it can even change your personality.


There are 500 species and three pounds of bacteria in your gut. These trillions of bacteria in your gut collectively contain at least 100 times as many genes as you do. The bacterial DNA in your gut outnumbers your own DNA by 100 times. You have about 20,000 genes, but there are 2,000,000 (or more) bacterial genes! Holy moly!


Altogether, your microbiome is a huge chemical factory that helps to…

  • Produce vitamins & key nutrients
  • Regulate hormones
  • Excrete toxins
  • Produce healing compounds.


Having too many bad critters hanging out in the gut has been linked to numerous problems including autism, obesity, diabetes, allergies, autoimmunity, depression, cancer, heart disease, fibromyalgia, eczema, and asthma. The links between chronic illness and an imbalanced microbiome keep growing everyday.


Having a healthy gut should mean more to you than being annoyed by a little bloating or heartburn. It is central to your entire health and connected to everything that happens in your body. That’s why I always start talking to my clients about fixing their gut health first.

What Hinders Your Microbiome?

The composition and overall health of the gut microbiome is dependent on…

  • Diet
  • Illness
  • Drinking alcohol or taking drugs
  • Body weight
  • Exposure to new environments (traveling overseas, for example)
  • Lack of sleep and chronic stress contribute to gut imbalance. In fact, your gut flora listens to and becomes influenced by your thoughts and feelings.
  • So be sure to get quality sleep (6-7 hours) and remember to practice stress reduction activities daily!
